The flickering emergency lights cast long, skeletal shadows across the Barcelona apartment building. The air hung thick with the stench of decay and something else… something primal and sickening. Cole Evans, his usually vibrant Wild Force ranger uniform now torn and stained, found himself struggling against the surprisingly strong grip of a gaunt, infected boy. Beside him, Reporter Ángela Vidal, her eyes wide with terror, was similarly restrained by a similarly infected girl.
A grotesque, pulsating vermiform organism, glistening with an unnatural luminescence, was forced into Ángela’s mouth. A whimper escaped her lips. Cole thrashed, his animal instincts screaming at him to fight, but the boy held firm. The same monstrous worm was then thrust towards Cole. He braced himself for the violation, the world blurring at the edges.
Then, darkness.
Cole awoke to the rhythmic clang of machinery and the sterile scent of antiseptic. He was chained to a bed in a small, harshly lit cell. Disoriented, he felt a dull ache in his stomach. He learned later that he and Ángela were aboard a ship, a floating medical facility hastily assembled to deal with the Barcelona outbreak. Ángela was in a separate, less secure room, spared the chains and the heavy atmosphere of quarantine that hung about Cole.
A medical team, Drs. Ethan Choi and Clara Vidal, entered his cell. They offered him water and a bland protein bar. Then came the phone. Cole’s brother, James, his voice thick with worry, was on the other end.
“Cole? Cole, are you okay? Dr. Choi, is he eating? Drinking?” James’ voice crackled across the ocean.
Dr. Choi, a calm and efficient woman, assured James Cole had accepted nourishment. “We will be drawing blood and conducting some light exercise evaluations,” she explained, her tone professional, her eyes concerned.
Later, James arrived, his face etched with concern. He saw Ángela in the hallway, speaking rapid Spanish to a nurse. He surprised himself by understanding enough to piece together her anxious inquiries about his brother. He responded in her language, assuring her Cole would be alright.
The reunion between brothers was brief but heartfelt. James peppered Dr. Clara with questions, his anxiety palpable. “How is he doing? He’s… he’s my little brother, you know?”
While Cole underwent physical therapy, something unexpected happened. He doubled over, convulsing, and then, with a violent heave, he vomited up the grotesque worm. It landed with a sickening thud on the sterile floor.
Relief washed over Cole. He collapsed into James’ arms. He was then moved to a more comfortable room, given time to recover, to simply… be. The nightmare was over, at least for now. But the memory of the Barcelona apartment, of the infected children, and the chilling violation of that monstrous worm would remain, a haunting echo in the quiet stillness of the ship’s recovery ward. The silence, however, was broken only by the faint, reassuring hum of the life support systems.
