Screenplay for Act III

INT. COUNSELING OFFICE – DAY

Ethan sits behind his desk, his eyes closed in concentration.

ALEX, a young man in his early 20s, enters the room. He looks nervous and uncertain.

ALEX
> Excuse me, is this… Ethan Hayes?
ETHAN
> Yes, it is. Please, have a seat.

Alex sits down opposite Ethan.

ETHAN
> How can I help you?
ALEX
> I’m… I’m Alex. Javi’s brother.

Ethan’s face falls.

ETHAN
> Alex… I’m so sorry about your brother.
ALEX
> Yeah. Thanks. He… he talked about you a lot.
ETHAN
> Did he?
ALEX
> Yeah. He said you were the one who helped him turn his life around.
ETHAN
> I tried. But I couldn’t save him.
ALEX
> No, it wasn’t your fault. He made his own choices. But… but he said that you gave him hope.

Ethan takes a deep breath.

ETHAN
> I’m glad. Alex, what brings you here today?
ALEX
> I… I’m struggling. I’ve been using heroin. And I can’t seem to stop.

Ethan nods sympathetically.

ETHAN
> I understand. Addiction is a powerful force. But it’s not invincible.
ALEX
> You don’t get it. I’m not like Javi. I’m not a bad person.
ETHAN
> Addiction doesn’t discriminate, Alex. It can affect anyone, regardless of who they are or what they’ve done.
ALEX
> But I don’t deserve this. After what I did to you.

Ethan looks at Alex in confusion.

ETHAN
> What are you talking about?
ALEX
> Javi told me. About how I stole from you. How I hurt you.
ETHAN
> That was a long time ago, Alex. I’m not angry anymore.
ALEX
> But I am. I’m angry that I hurt you. And I’m angry at myself for letting addiction control my life.

Ethan stands up and walks towards Alex.

ETHAN
> Alex, it’s not too late. You can still turn your life around.
ALEX
> How?
ETHAN
> By facing your demons. By accepting help.
ALEX
> I don’t know.
ETHAN
> I know it’s hard. But I’m here for you. I’ll help you every step of the way.

Alex hesitates for a moment, then nods.

ALEX
> Okay. I’ll do it.

Ethan smiles.

ETHAN
> That’s all I ask.

FADE OUT.

Years Later

EXT. PARK – DAY

Ethan and Alex sit on a bench, watching children play.

ALEX
> It’s hard to believe it’s been so long.
ETHAN
> I know. It feels like just yesterday, you were a troubled young man, struggling with addiction.
ALEX
> I owe you everything, Ethan. You saved my life.
ETHAN
> You saved your own life, Alex. I just helped you find your way.

Alex smiles.

ALEX
> I’m so glad I found you.
ETHAN
> As am I.

Alex turns to Ethan.

ALEX
> By the way, I have a surprise for you.

Alex pulls out a small box and hands it to Ethan.

Ethan opens the box and gasps. It’s a picture of Javi, sitting next to a little girl.

ETHAN
> This is… this is beautiful!
ALEX
> It’s my daughter, Lily. She’s named after her uncle.

Ethan’s eyes fill with tears.

ETHAN
> Thank you, Alex. This is the best gift you could have given me.
ALEX
> Don’t mention it. After all, you gave me the gift of life.

Ethan and Alex embrace.

ETHAN
> I’m so proud of you, Alex.
ALEX
> Thanks, Ethan. I couldn’t have done it without you.
ETHAN
> I know. And I’m honored to have been a part of your journey.

Ethan and Alex continue to watch the children play, their faces filled with a sense of peace and fulfillment.
