In a somewhat worn-out building in Cleveland, Ohio

In a somewhat worn-out building in Cleveland, Ohio, former police detective Tanya Everstone and her autistic son Nataniel Everstone, a.k.a Nate, founded and co-owns EverStone Investigations. Tanya was a medium-sized woman with shoulder-length brown hair, and Nate was a teenage boy of average height and slightly built with brown hair in a short buzz cut. Tanya remembered thinking about the office and everything in it, including Nate. The office could have been better, but it was what they could afford in the Cleveland area and be comfortable. But she still carried her weapon. That beautiful black 40-caliber Beretta. She always stayed home with it. They worked and saved for this. He worked as hard as she did. When he put his mind to something, he was all in. Tonya could have been better with money, but he kept her on budget. “The boy has a mind for numbers,” she thought, remembering the time they were sitting at the dinner table as he would recite the multiplication table, from zero times zero to seventeen times seventeen, at the age of 9. They got compliments on the office furniture from clients from time to time. She didn’t tell all of them, but just about every piece of furniture came from thrift stores, yard sales, or The Good Will. She looked for sturdy wood pieces, and with the help of her parents, it would get a good sanding, painting, some new foam, and padding because her son loved to remind her that it needed to support her ample rear end – God Love him- and before we knew it, that $5 chair looks like something we could have easily spent $50 on. She’s never turned away hand-me-downs because why? It’s free, like her big oak desk. It was a beat-up hand-me-down. It’s huge. It took a week to clean, sand, and fill in the dents on the top that looked like they were made by a ball peen hammer, with the wood filler she picked up at Walmart, stained it with that red mahogany she was so fond of, and had been trying to get her hair a similar color for years. And then the final coat of varnish. Not to mention the four guys it took to move it. And it was not going to move from the spot it was in. Not without help, anyway. It sits in the back of the office, so she can always watch the door and see out the windows. She loves being able to watch people when things are quiet. But it’s also because she can’t have anyone coming up behind her. Her fears and anxieties play a part in that. But she feels safe with how her office is set, and she can keep an eye on her son and the world as it goes by the windows and door. And even safer knowing her Beretta is stashed in that secret drawer in the middle of her desk. Walking in from the front door, her desk is straight ahead to her right is her son’s desk. To her left is a little loveseat she found on the Facebook marketplace. She got it home, vacuumed and cleaned it up, and got it all sanitized. It’s worth a lot more than she spent on it. On each side of the loveseat are two simple, matching end tables. Both were painted black. And on both end tables are just some little gray tabletop lamps that she picked up at a thrift store. They don’t do much for light In the room, and it’s just more about ambiance. Nate and Tanya had skills they could apply to their line of work with Tanya and all her experience on the police force and as a consultant for the Cleveland police department, always assisting them in cases a little more complicated and unusual than the rest. Nate, with a type of autism boarding on savant, had always been surprisingly intuitive and had a keen eye for detail. By observing his mother and her work and studying criminal psychology, criminology, and even forensic science, he could read people and analyze his surroundings. He always had at least some idea of what was going on. At 16 years old, Nate was set to graduate high school. He was planning to pursue a degree in Criminal Law at Ohio State University. It was just before 8:AM on a Saturday. The mother and son duo just got breakfast from a nearby donut shop. They opened the office for the day, and as Tanya sat down at her desk and noticed blinking lights on her work phone, they figured it would be a busy day. Just as I settled in for the day, there was a knock on the door. It was a woman who needed help. Her name was Anna Wilkes. She looked pale and disheveled to the point it was clear that she had not eaten or slept in days. Nate made her coffee when she came in and offered her some bagels. She asked if they could find her son, Mark Wilkes, with special needs. Mrs. Wilkes handed them a picture of her and said he had been missing 72 and was last seen at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. He has been suffering from short-term memory loss and similar issues. The last anyone saw him was when his mother dropped him off at the hospital for his appointment with Dr. Hector Barton. She gave Mark a note and told him to show it to the receptionist and that she would pick him up after work. She watched Mark enter the building and drive off. When she returned, Mark was nowhere to be found, and she asked the receptionist where he could be, but she said he had never shown up for his appointment. She and various staff members and security even had them look through the security footage, which was still nowhere to be found. She then filed a report with the police and said they would look but couldn’t make any gerentes with so little to go on. Then, one of the officers she spoke to handed her a card and said that if she wanted help, she should go to EverStone Investigations. Tanya, understanding what it’s like to have a special needs child, took the case and had Nate go to the hospital. At the same time, she stayed at the office and insisted that Mrs. Wilkes stay and get some rest, which she agreed to. Nate rode up to the hospital’s main entrance in an Uber with his mother on the phone, ready to help him should the surroundings or the people prove overwhelming. Nate went to the receptionist’s desk and asked Dr. Hector Barton, the only person besides his mother who had last seen Mark. Nate walked up to the receptionist and asked to speak to Dr. Barton. She asked if he had an appointment, to which Nate responded no and then showed her his valid detective license. She then committed to how he looked a little young. Nate’s response was to go on a small rant about how he had passed all the necessary tests. It was a sort of assistant to many official law enforcement professionals, especially his mother. The receptionist politely interrupted him and said that the doctor wasn’t there. Just then, Nate heard a voice from behind saying yes, I am. It was Doctor Barton. He was a slightly tall, lanky man with short, curly black hair and a strange, almost purple shade of color in his left eye. Dr. Barton escorted Nate to his office for questioning. It was small but well-decorated, with a medium-sized desk in the center and two large bookshelves full of medical books and documents. and those shelves a framed medical degree in neurology from Stanford Medical School. Nate asked Dr. Barton if Mark had ever made it to his appointment, and the doctor said he had never done so. Dr. Barton then committed that Nate was autistic as he noticed behavioral traits in Nate typical of people on the spectrum. The doctor then gave him a copy of the business card and asked him to call if anything new came up. Back at the office, after reporting everything, Nate learned he and Tanya decided he was hiding something and needed help finding out what. Then, Axel Cran, better known on the streets as slick-back, enters. Ax is a large, burly man with slicked-back greaser-style hair always wearing black, especially leather jackets. Officially, his job is that of a bounty hunter and police informant. Still, his real job is best described as a domestic mercenary. He is deeply connected in the city’s underbelly if deals are going on in a back alley, deals secret ordeals behind closed doors he knows about at the very least. He is a long-time friend of the family. Using the hacking skills of a friend of his, he could dig up dirt on Dr. Barton’s background. He was so smart that he was the top middle and high school student. He was also in and out of institutions when he was little for setting fires and once for supposedly mutilating a dog when he was about 10. That hacker friend accessed the hospital’s blueprints and floor plans and used all that information to find a way to Dr. Barton’s office. Both Nate and Ax left for the hospital. Once they got there, they donned some scrubs and face masks and went through the basement upwards, bypassing security cameras and guards. While Tanya was back at the office oversaw everything via body cams on both Nate and Ax until they finally made it to Barton’s office. Ax proceeded to pick the lock open while Nate kept a lookout. Once they were in, they searched the entire room carefully and quietly, looking through every nook and cranny. Then Nate, while he was looking through a desk drawer, thought that something looked odd about it. After examining it further, he found it had a false bottom. After delicately removing the false bottom, he found a key labeled #B26. Looking at the ledgers of the hospital, thanks to Ax’s hacker friend, it was discovered that there was a room in the basement called #B26, supposedly an extra storage unit that was hardly ever used and that the only exciting key went missing. Ax and Nate went to the basement and found the door matching the key. Using the key to unlock the door, they found what appeared to be a small lab covered in tiled walls with medical cabinets containing various research materials and documents, even some strange drawings, and at the center of the room, an operating table with a set of operating tools both Nate and Ax took pictures of the room and everything in it and sent copies to Tanya’s computer. According to the notes personally written by Dr. Barton is convinced that mental disabilities can be fixed and has been conducting research to develop operations and treatments to do so. Also, using certain patients as test subjects often fabricates their conditions and the severity of them to hide the truth behind their disappearances. Out of nowhere, Nate realized after reading the doctor’s notes that they would find something in the morgue. The two of them looked around the place and found nothing out of the ordinary until Nate analyzed the structure and shape of the room and closely examined a sort of drawing or schematic he found in Barton’s notes; he followed the lines of the drawing and began to walk along the mortuary shelving units paying close attention to each door and then when he finally stops and opens the unit door right in front of him. Nate opens the door and finds a body labeled John Doe. Still, after removing the sheet from his face, it’s revealed to be Mark Wilkes. Upon reexamining the doctor’s most recent entries, he realized he experimented on Mark by surgically removing and replacing his hippocampus with the one of a cancer patient whose brain was left in perfect condition. Of course, such a procedure is impossible. While some neurological transplants have been known to occur, such a complex and unorthodox procedure is impossible. However, based on his notes, Dr. Barton believes otherwise. Tanya, still seeing everything via the body cams, contacted her friends with the police and sent copies of the pictures and recordings of the live feed as both Ax and Nate decided to head back to the office. The police quickly obtained a warrant to search Dr. Barton’s house and immediately made their way to the house. Police officers knocked on the door, awaiting a response, but nothing, so they broke it down. The police then stormed the house. They searched every inch of Dr. Barton until they found his computer accessed his most recent browser history and found that he recently purchased a one-way plane ticket to the Poconos. Set to depart from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport at 1:30 AM. The police rushed to the airport, alerted security once they arrived, and formed a search party. Meanwhile, back at the office, Nate and Tanya saw everything going on via hacked security cameras and body cams on the lookout for Barton. Eventually, they found the gate for his flight, but neither Nate nor Tanya could shake their strange feeling. The officers showed the gate agent a picture of Dr. Barton. They questioned if they had seen him or if anyone matching his description had boarded the agent. Then, they apologized and said he had not seen anyone like that. Their suspensions were confirmed when they realized that Barton wasn’t ever there. The flight was just a diversion. He had long since escaped by some other unknown means. Nate and Tanya returned to the doctor’s house and ran into Detective Robert Antler. The lead investigator on the scene and Tanya’s old partner was an African-American of average size with short curly hair and a bushy mustache. After a short exchange of words between Tanya and Detective Antler, Both she and Nate went inside the house. They carefully examined all the evidence and information the investigation had brought. They began to wonder what was missing, some sort of Escape Route or plan. Nate and Tanya went to the basement and looked through various items and papers left in boxes. Then, they began to hear what they thought was a strange sound, like a quiet wind. They followed the feeling of a small gust to a shelf elf in the basement walls. They examined the shelf and found a hidden panel. Upon removing it, they found the doorway, a small entrance that led to the local sewer systems. This was how Doctor Barton made his Escape. Upon discovering this, the Escape Route into the police, but they could not expect to find them, and he could have long since gone anywhere. At the police precinct, Detective Antler’s office, they went over what they knew we were about Dr. Barton. We began by placing dots on numerous crimes. It seems he has played a part over the years. Dr. Barton was a very calculating and meticulous individual over the very deranged and just brilliant mind, and the fact that he said he was out there free as a bird put them all on edge, for no one knew where he was going or where he could come up next and what he might do and whether or not he ever comes back and what will happen if he does As soon as his Nate and Tanya walked into their office they both will sit down and exhausted and untriumphant As they sat there realizing using that for the first time that they were outsmarted or did by a criminal they realized was it likely won’t be the last time they ever see BartonTanya explaind to her son that you don’t always get the bad guy or manage to win sometimes the only the thing you can do is wait For the next time I’m on the guy rears his ugly head because being caught doesn’t necessarily mean being in handcuffs or being behind bars sometimes it means being exposed for who you are and having the right people know that you do what you do and what kind of person you are and knowing that they are ready to bring you in the next time you show up and there is always a next time with these guys that was the case for many a criminal duringTanya’s days on the force there were times where she wasn’t able to get put the guilty away the first time around but when they got back to their old Antics it was a matter of time before she brought them in like every other Criminal she busted. Dr. Hector Barton was not going to be any different. Tanya ensured that, and Nate believed in her like he always had. He trusted his mother and her intuition wholeheartedly, and they were being prepared for when he returned.
