INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT
Hung slumps on the sofa, a half-empty bottle of rice wine beside him. Lan sits at the table, carefully packing a small suitcase. Chi sits on the floor, playing with a worn teddy bear.
LAN (softly)
Chi, honey, it’s time for bed.
Chi looks up, her eyes wide. She doesn’t move.
CHI
Mama, will Papa be okay?
Lan smiles sadly and kneels down, hugging her daughter close.
LAN
Papa will be fine. Just a little tired.
HUNG (mumbling)
Tired? Tired of you, you mean. Tired of this… this… life!
He throws a crumpled paper bag at the wall. It explodes open, revealing empty beer bottles. Lan winces.
LAN
Hung, please. You’re scaring Chi.
HUNG
I’m scaring you too, aren’t I? I’m scaring you with my truth! The truth is, you’re tired of me! You just don’t want to say it!
He lurches to his feet, unsteady. He grabs Lan’s arm, his grip tight.
HUNG (cont.)
Don’t leave me, Lan. Don’t leave me alone with this… this…
He collapses on the sofa, sobbing. Lan tries to pull away but Hung’s grip is too strong.
CHI
Papa, stop it!
Chi stands up, tears rolling down her cheeks.
CHI (cont.)
Please don’t hurt Mama.
Lan finally breaks free. She looks at Chi, her eyes filled with pain.
LAN
Chi, go to your room.
CHI
Mama…
LAN
Go, Chi.
Chi reluctantly leaves, the teddy bear clutched in her hand.
HUNG
So, you’re going to leave? You’re going to leave me like this?
LAN
I’m not leaving you. I’m leaving this. This… this monster you’ve become.
She picks up the suitcase and walks towards the door. Hung lunges at her, but he’s too slow. Lan manages to open the door and steps out.
HUNG (cont.)
Come back! You can’t leave me!
LAN
I have to. For Chi, for myself.
She closes the door, leaving Hung’s pleas echoing behind her.
FADE OUT.
