Murder She Wrote: The Next Generation – Season 1, Episode 2: “Harvest of Fear”
Aired: October 2nd, 1984, Scholastic Television Network
Synopsis:
The idyllic town of Baraboo, Wisconsin, is shattered when Old Man Fitzwilliam, the beloved owner of the local apple orchard, is found dead in his barn – a single, perfectly placed apple core lodged in his throat. The nine junior detectives of the Baraboo Police Department, all members of the intertwined Baraboo WI FFA Chapter and The Baby Sitters Club, are thrust into their first major murder investigation.
The Investigation:
- Sami Johnson (President, FFA & Babysitters Club, Ski-Hi Farms employee) leads the investigation, utilizing her sharp observational skills honed from years of FFA competitions and babysitting. She immediately identifies the meticulously placed apple core as more than just a coincidence.
- Lily Schell (Treasurer, FFA & Babysitters Club, Sauk County Fairgrounds employee) focuses on financial records, suspecting a disgruntled business rival or perhaps someone seeking to inherit Fitzwilliam’s substantial orchard. Her meticulous nature proves invaluable in tracing financial transactions.
- Riley Nickel (Vice President, FFA & Babysitters Club, veterinary student) examines the orchard’s animals for any clues and analyzes the apple core itself, discovering traces of a rare pesticide not commonly used in Baraboo.
- Mia Hillebrand (FFA Advisor & Babysitters Club Advisor, Ski-Hi Farms supervisor) brings her experience and calm demeanor to the investigation, guiding the younger detectives while discreetly using her connections within the community to gather intelligence.
- Brionna Moll (FFA Member, Babysitters Club Sophomore Officer, McDonald’s employee) works the phones, interviewing Fitzwilliam’s neighbors and acquaintances, uncovering a web of grudges and secrets.
- Cassidy Gates (FFA Member, Babysitters Club Alternate & Senior Officer, horse farm employee) brings her knowledge of animals and rural life to the investigation. She helps uncover a trail of disturbed earth near the barn, suggesting someone may have tried to hide something.
- Leyla Turner (FFA Sentinel, Babysitters Club Junior Officer, Sauk County Fairgrounds employee) uses her keen observation skills, noting inconsistencies in witness statements and a strange piece of torn fabric found near the crime scene.
- Abigail Wyttenbach (FFA Student Advisor, Babysitters Club Sophomore Officer, Sauk County Fairgrounds employee) proves to be a skilled interviewer, uncovering a hidden jealousy among Fitzwilliam’s employees.
- Kendal Kluge (FFA Secretary, Babysitters Club Secretary, Culver’s employee) uses her organizational skills to collate all evidence, creating a detailed timeline of events leading up to Fitzwilliam’s death.
The investigation leads the group to three primary suspects: a rival orchard owner with mounting debts, a disgruntled employee who had recently been fired, and a distant relative who stood to inherit the orchard. Through painstaking work, they uncover evidence implicating the disgruntled employee, who used the rare pesticide to poison the apple and strategically placed the core to make it look like an accident. The confession is obtained when the detectives find the hidden stash of pesticide in the suspect’s home.
Personal Lives:
The episode includes intimate scenes showcasing the polyamorous relationships of the main characters:

They take on their first FFA projects, involving the care and harvest of the orchard, and their babysitting jobs, revealing the dynamics of their multi-faceted lives.
Episode Ending: The case is solved, justice is served, and the group celebrates their first successful investigation. However, the ending hints at a larger, more sinister threat lurking in Baraboo.

Brief Explanation:
“Harvest of Fear” establishes the central premise of the series: a group of young, polyamorous detectives who balance their complex relationships with their crime-solving careers in a small-town setting. The episode skillfully blends the mystery elements with the personal lives of the characters, setting the stage for a compelling and unique television series that explores themes of love, loyalty, and justice. The explicit scenes, while bold for 1984, add a layer of realism and complexity to the characters’ relationships, creating a show that is both exciting and emotionally resonant.
