The school bell chimed, its metallic sound echoing through the house. Carter Grayson, a Power Ranger with a heart of gold, waited for his older sister, Emma, to return from school. It had been a long day, filled with the usual school day anxieties, but he was ready to hear all about it.
But the familiar sound of the front door opening was replaced by a nervous voice on the phone. The school nurse, her voice laced with concern, explained that Emma had been involved in a fight and had sustained a black eye. Carter’s stomach clenched.
“She needs someone to pick her up,” the nurse said.
Carter’s heart pounded. Emma was tough, but even she couldn’t win every fight. He called their mother, the worry clear in his voice as he recounted the events. His mother rushed Emma to the hospital, leaving Carter to prepare for the worst.
The news from the doctor wasn’t good. The injury could affect Emma’s vision, causing blurriness and pain. She would need rest, lots of it.
As his mother and Emma returned, Carter prepared Emma’s room, ensuring everything was comfortable. He couldn’t bear to see her hurt, but he knew he had to be strong for her.
Emma was exhausted, her black eye throbbing with pain. She refused any food or drink, her eyelids heavy with sleep. The next morning, Carter gently woke her up, reminding her to take her medicine. Cole, his best friend and fellow Ranger, arrived to pick him up, his expression filled with concern for Emma.
“She’ll be alright,” Carter said, though the words felt hollow.
Back home, Emma found solace in talking to her friend, Natalie, about the upcoming cheerleading practice. Natalie, a natural cheerleader, had been kind enough to record the practice so Emma wouldn’t miss anything.
Carter, returning from school, found Emma in her room, her face pale and bruised. He gently helped her change the gauze, the touch of his hand a comfort to her. He knew that Emma, a bright, bubbly girl, couldn’t stay cooped up forever.
He made her a special smoothie with extra banana and carrots, the sweetness balancing the bitterness of the situation. He knew Emma’s favorite snack was banana bread, so he baked a loaf, hoping it would bring a smile to her face.
“No phone until Friday, Em,” Carter said firmly, his voice tinged with concern.
The following Friday arrived, a beacon of hope in Emma’s week. She was ready to go back to school, ready to cheer, ready to be back with her friends. Her eye was still healing, but she was determined to be back in action.
Emma, her face alight with determination, looked at her reflection in the mirror. She was a fighter, a survivor. With a confident smile, she adjusted her special eye patch, ready to take on the world, and the cheer routine.
