Raymond Holt becomes the captain of the NYPD’s fictional 99th precinct and almost immediately clashes with Jake Peralta, who’s as immature as he is skilled at solving crimes. Despite their clashing personalities in their work approach, both learn to tolerate and respect each other while solving crimes, and establish the precinct’s annual Halloween heist in the process. Jake’s partner, Amy Santiago, repeatedly tries to ingratiate herself with Holt, as she’s a fan of his work. Jake and Amy have an ongoing bet over who can get the most felonies, which ultimately ends with Jake winning. He takes Amy on a fake date but starts to develop actual feelings for her in the process.

Jake’s friend, Charles Boyle, struggles in his romantic life as he has a crush on fellow Detective Rosa Diaz, who does not reciprocate his feelings. He is awarded with a Medal of Valor after he is shot in the buttocks while protecting Rosa from a criminal with a grudge against Holt. At a party thrown by Holt and his husband, Kevin, he enters a relationship with a food author named Vivian Ludley and becomes engaged to her, but the two break up when Charles refuses to move to Canada with her. Meanwhile, Sergeant Terry Jeffords struggles to return to the field after the birth of his twin daughters, but eventually overcomes his fears.

Amy begins dating her old boyfriend Teddy Wells, much to Jake’s jealousy. Jake eventually uncovers a large conspiracy while investigating a civics leader with Amy and Holt’s help, forcing him to go undercover for the FBI to investigate. Before he leaves, Jake confesses his feelings to Amy. Charles is shocked to find that after Jake’s departure, he slept with the precinct’s sardonic civilian administrator, Gina Linetti.

Jake returns to the precinct after going undercover to help take down the mafia. After struggling to get over his feelings for Amy, he begins a relationship with defense lawyer Sophia Perez, which ends based on their conflicting professions. Amy decides to break up with Teddy due to his dull personality.

Charles and Gina attempt to keep their secret relationship before deciding to expose it to the precinct after Jake and Amy catch them in the act. After ending it, they end up accidentally hooking up Charles’ father with Gina’s mother. They initially attempt to break it up, but eventually accept it as their parents get married. Meanwhile, Rosa begins a relationship with Holt’s nephew Marcus.

Holt engages in a battle of wits with his old colleague turned rival, Deputy Commissioner Madeline Wuntch. She initially tricks him into accepting a high budget to combat a newer drug on the market called “Giggle Pig”, but a task force led by Rosa ultimately succeeds in taking down the operation with assistance from Jake and the Pontiac Bandit.

When they eventually stop a high-stakes robbery case with Wuntch’s assistance, she reveals she helped them succeed so Holt could become the head of the NYPD Public Affairs Division, resulting in him leaving the Nine-Nine. Amy and Jake kiss while they are on an undercover job and a relationship develops.

Following the kiss that Jake and Amy had, the two decide to pursue a real relationship. The Nine-Nine gets a new captain, Seth Dozerman (Bill Hader) who dies of a heart attack after seeing Jake and Amy kissing. The Vulture assumes command of the precinct, but Holt retakes it thanks to Jake after the two of them catch a serial killer. Charles begins a relationship with Genevieve, an art curator who was framed for insurance fraud. Terry’s wife gives birth to their third daughter, Ava, on Thanksgiving.

Rosa breaks up with Marcus and begins a new relationship with Adrian Pimento, a detective who’s been undercover for 12 years. Rosa and Adrian get engaged, but Adrian is forced to go into hiding when Jimmy “The Butcher” Figgis tries to have him killed by someone tied to the FBI. Amy goes undercover in a women’s prison in Texas to find out which FBI informant is tied to Figgis and discovers it was Holt’s former partner that they were working the case with, Bob Annderson. They capture Bob and use his knowledge to take down most of Figgis’ empire. Jake receives a call from Figgis threatening his and Holt’s lives, forcing the two to go to witness protection in Florida.

Jake and Holt are placed in Florida as part of the witness protection program until the Nine-Nine helps them take down Figgis. The squad is subsequently punished by being placed on the night shift, but are put back on the day shift when Captain Jason “C.J.” Stentley is transferred from active duty for his incompetence. Charles and Genevieve adopt a son, Nikolaj. Adrian returns and resumes his romance with Rosa, but they call off their wedding and decide to take their time getting to know each other. Jake and Amy move in together after having a bet to see which of them can keep their apartment for catching the most escaped criminals. Jake and Rosa compete for a spot on their idol Lt. Hawkins’ task force, but Hawkins turns out to be a dirty cop and she frames them for bank robbery. They are found guilty and are each sentenced to 15 years in jail.

Jake and Rosa adjust to life in jail before the Nine-Nine are able to bust Melanie Hawkins when Holt is forced to make a deal with local mobster Seamus Murphy. After their release, Jake realizes he’s not ready to be back out in the field right away and Rosa breaks up with Adrian. During the fifth annual Halloween heist, Jake proposes to Amy and they get engaged. On a trip to Los Angeles for the funeral of the Nine-Nine’s previous captain, Holt learns he’s in the running to become the new police commissioner and the crew vows to help him deal with Murphy. Rosa comes out as bisexual. Gina returns to the Nine-Nine after spending months on maternity leave. Though the crew successfully finds a loophole that allows Holt to keep up his deal with Murphy without jeopardizing his moral code, Murphy finds out about their ruse and threatens Kevin’s life.

Kevin is forced to remain in a safe house with Jake for two months to avoid detection from Murphy. After the Nine-Nine successfully locates Murphy’s hideout, Kevin takes down Murphy and the mobster and his men are successfully apprehended. Charles attempts to run his own food truck business. Amy passes the Sergeant’s Exam. After their wedding plans fall apart from a bomb threat, Jake and Amy get married outside of the precinct. The season ends at the after-party of their wedding where the squad is unsure whether Holt won the Commissioner title or not.

Holt finds out he lost the commissioner position to John Kelly and is sent into a deep depression until Jake and Amy encourage him to stand up to Kelly’s regressive policies, resulting in the new commissioner retaliating against the Nine-Nine. Gina quits her job after deciding that her talents would be better spent elsewhere and becomes a successful internet celebrity. Amy and Jake debate on whether they want kids or not. Terry passes the Lieutenant’s Exam, and wins the “Cinco de Mayo” Heist aka Halloween Heist for the first time. However the Nine-Nine doesn’t have enough funds for him to stay and he finds out that he might be transferred to Staten Island.

Jake and Holt discover that Kelly is using his new anonymous tip app to illegally wiretap the population, forcing them to recruit some of their old rivals to help expose his crimes. Thanks to Jake and Wuntch staging an arrest for a fake kidnapping, Kelly is suspended and Wuntch becomes the acting commissioner. She uses her new position to allow Terry to stay at the Nine-Nine and force Holt to make up for his missing patrol officer days.

Holt struggles with adjusting to his demotion to a patrol officer. He eventually returns to his captain position after the unexpected death of his rival, Madeline Wuntch. Jake and Amy decide to start trying to have a baby and eventually find out that they’re expecting after struggling to conceive for six months. Charles is accepted into one of Holt’s new task forces. For the first time in the precinct’s history, the Halloween Heist produces a three-time winner after Rosa wins the Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and Easter Heists.

Brooklyn experiences a blackout on the night Amy’s water breaks. Amy manages to successfully lead blackout protocols while Jake and Charles stop a group of bank robbers that caused the city-wide chaos. With help from their colleagues, Jake manages to make it to Amy just as she gives birth to their son, McClane “Mac” Peralta-Santiago.

The precinct experiences drastic changes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd protests. Rosa quits her job and becomes a private investigator after losing faith in the system, Holt struggles to maintain his relationship with Kevin, and Hitchcock retires and keeps in touch with Scully via FaceTime. Jake and Amy attempt to keep their work lives under control during their first year as parents. In response to the increasing tension between officers and the citizens, Amy plans to implement a major reform program, which puts her in the crosshairs of old-school NYPD Union President Frank O’Sullivan. Jake is suspended for five months after making a wrongful arrest on a case he was let go from.

Holt ultimately repairs his relationship with Kevin and they renew their vows. The squad also successfully stop O’Sullivan from sabotaging the reform program proposal, leading to the commissioner implementing it citywide and appointing Holt and Amy as deputy commissioner and chief of the program, respectively. With Amy’s new position making their parenting schedule more difficult, Jake decides to quit his job to be a full-time father while Terry becomes the new Captain of the precinct. all of them eventually decide to continue their Halloween Heists despite their life changes.

The air crackled with tension as Captain Raymond Holt, a man whose sternness was only matched by his impeccable suit, addressed the 99th precinct. His gaze swept over the faces of his officers, landing on the smirking Detective Jake Peralta, a master of mischief and crime-solving in equal measure. “As your new captain,” Holt began, his voice a measured baritone, “I expect nothing less than absolute professionalism.”

Jake, however, was already sketching a cartoon of Holt in his notepad, a caricature that emphasized his Captain’s perpetually furrowed brow and severe posture. “Yes, sir,” he muttered, a barely suppressed giggle escaping his lips.

The clash was instantaneous and inevitable. Holt, a stickler for rules and procedure, found Jake’s unorthodox methods infuriating, while Jake saw Holt’s rigidness as a challenge to be circumvented with his own brand of chaos. Yet, despite their constant clashes, their shared dedication to justice proved a common ground.

Amidst the chaos, Detective Amy Santiago, a meticulous and ambitious detective with a penchant for Captain Holt’s strict adherence to the law, was determined to win his favor. She diligently followed every rule, striving for perfection in everything she did, much to Jake’s amusement. Their playful rivalry, fueled by a bet on who could solve the most felony cases, became a constant source of entertainment and tension. Jake, a natural prankster, loved to push Amy’s buttons, while she, with her unwavering dedication, always aimed to outsmart him.

As they navigated the treacherous world of crime, they found themselves entangled in a web of conspiracies and personal dilemmas. Jake’s friend, Charles Boyle, a sweet and lovable detective, grappled with his unrequited love for the enigmatic Detective Rosa Diaz, while Sergeant Terry Jeffords, a father of twin girls, struggled to balance his responsibilities as a cop with his family life.

Their adventures unfolded in a whirlwind of high-stakes cases, unexpected twists, and the inevitable Halloween heists. Each year, Jake, with his creative mind, would devise an elaborate plan to steal the coveted trophy from Captain Holt, a tradition that only solidified their tense yet strangely affectionate dynamic.

Through it all, amidst the laughter, the arguments, and the shared triumphs, a sense of camaraderie blossomed. Jake, under Holt’s unwavering guidance, began to see the merit in structure and discipline, while Holt, witnessing Jake’s unorthodox brilliance, learned to loosen his rigid grip.

Their journey wasn’t without its trials. Jake’s undercover mission forced him to confront his feelings for Amy, leading to a confession that shook the foundation of their relationship. Charles, in a surprising turn, found himself entangled in a secret affair with Gina Linetti, the precinct’s sassy civilian administrator, a revelation that sent shockwaves through the 99th.

And then there was Deputy Commissioner Madeline Wuntch, Holt’s nemesis and a master of manipulation, who constantly tested his patience and threw roadblocks in his path. Yet, even in the face of her relentless schemes, Holt’s dedication to justice and his unwavering belief in his team never wavered.

Through it all, the 99th precinct, a melting pot of personalities, remained a family, bound by their shared purpose and the unbreakable bond of friendship. Their stories, a tapestry of laughter, love, and daring adventures, continued to unfold, each case a new chapter in the ever-evolving saga of the 99th.
